‘Exposure’ is a self-portrait of the artist Emma Savage, photographed in the Lighting Studio at Elam School of Fine Arts, the University of Auckland.
Inspired by the “institutional critique” artwork from Andrea Fraser and Louise Lawler, ‘Exposure’ aims to reveal the market forces of the contemporary art world within an exhibition setting. The artist-in-studio-portrait trope, commonly used in marketing, is placed on the gallery wall to unmask the economic intentions of the participating artists, universities, awards organisation and venue of the Eden Arts Art School Award. The title ‘Exposure’ refers to how this exhibition enables up-and-coming artists to gain recognition, as well as the photography term.
